Rash of vehicle break-ins strikes West Reading

Within about two hours the morning of April 1, West Reading police received three reports of vehicle break-ins within a few blocks of each other. Police did not specify what was stolen from the vehicles:

  • 8:05 a.m., 200 block of South Second Avenue;
  • 9:30 a.m., 309 Sunset Road;
  • 10:06 a.m., 100 block of South Second Avenue.

There’s more. Two days later, on April 3, more residents told police of thefts from their vehicles:

  • 7:08 a.m., 200 block of Reading Avenue;
  • 7:52 a.m., 300 block of Summit Street. Two vehicles were broken into. Police said some CDs and a registration/insurance card were taken from one vehicle.
  • 9:59 a.m., 300 block of Summit Street. The vehicle’s owner left it unlocked and discovered some CDs and loose change were missing.
  • 2:32 p.m., 100 block of North Third Avenue; and
  • 2:40 p.m., 300 block of Summit Street.

On April 4, three vehicles were broken into, one of them overnight, within a block of each other: one in the 300 block of Penn Avenue and another in the 300 block of Reading Avenue. Police found a black duffle bag next to the latter vehicle, but none of the items stolen from the victim’s car were in the bag. Another vehicle was broken into in the 400 block of Oak Terrace, but police didn’t learn about that for two days.

Two vehicles were broken into April 5:

  • 7:55 a.m., 400 block of Pine Street; and
  • 10 a.m., 400 block of Sunset Road.

On April 6, five more vehicle break-ins were reported in the borough:

  • 1:39 a.m., 700 block of Wayne Avenue;
  • 10 a.m., 100 block of South Seventh Avenue;
  • 8:04 a.m., 600 block of Reading Avenue;
  • 11:30 a.m., 700 block of Franklin Street. Theft took place overnight.
