Driver injures mother and child in car accident, now faces drunken-driving charges

A woman and her 4-year-old son suffered unspecified injuries when the car they were in about 10 p.m. Oct. 11 was rear-ended on Penn Avenue at the intersection of Sixth Avenue in West Reading. The driver of the car that struck the woman then drove away but a witness to the crash called police. Borough officers tracked the driver down to a home in the 600 block of Fourth Street in Reading, where he was taken into custody for a blood test at the DUI center. When the results came back (his blood-alcohol content was 0.23,  nearly three times the legal threshold of 0.08 for drunken driving) police arrested him.

The suspect, a 48-year-old Reading man, was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with two counts of drunken driving and one count each of causing an accident involving injury, following too closely causing an accident involving property damage and driving without a license. He was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

He has been arrested two previous times this year, according to court records, both on suspicion of drunken driving: once in February in West Reading and once in May in Wyomissing, according to court records, which also indicate he had not yet gone to trial on those charges.
