Auto theft suspect waives preliminary hearing

A Reading man accused of stealing a car in the city and breaking into four others in West Reading faces a possible jury trial on charges stemming from his July 5 arrest in the 600 block of Penn Avenue in West Reading.

The suspect waived his July 26 preliminary hearing before District Judge Timothy Dougherty. Borough police said officers spotted him driving a car about 3:02 a.m. July 5 near Seventh and Wayne avenues. The vehicle traveled around the block, then headed down an alley with its lights out. After police stopped the vehicle, two people jumped out and officers chased them on foot. Officers from Wyomissing and Lower Heidelberg police stopped the man behind a building in the 600 block of Penn Avenue, after he had tried to escape on a bicycle. The passenger was a juvenile.

West Reading police said the man admitted breaking into four vehicles in the borough after they stole the car in Reading. They swiped stereo equipment, jumper cables and a cell phone from the other vehicles, according to court records.

The suspect faces charges of receiving stolen property, driving with a suspended or revoked license, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, conspiring to receive stolen property and corruption of minors. He had pleaded guilty earlier this year to simple assault in Reading.

He remains jailed in Berks County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.
