Theft suspect waives preliminary hearing

A man accused of stealing three purses from two locked cars in March faces a possible jury trial on charges of theft and receiving stolen property. The suspect, a 28-year-old Reading resident, waived his hearing March 29 before District Judge Timothy Dougherty.

Wyomissing police said the man smashed a window in a Honda Prelude parked March 18 in a parking lot off Old Mill Road. Police chased the man through the Wyomissing Creek and into a park in West Reading. After he was caught he told police where the purses were hidden. A third purse had been taken from a Kia Sephia parked in the same lot.

The total value of the purses' items was $779.31. Police recovered all three purses and returned them to their owners.

Following his preliminary hearing the man was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail. All the charges – three counts each of theft and receiving stolen property and two counts of theft from a motor vehicle – were waived for court.
